Aloo Tikki

Aloo Tikki is one of my all time favorite dish. Aloo means potato and tikki means a patty so aloo tikki means potato patty. The tikkis are usually deep fried but I stay away from deep frying and as such whenever I make tikkis to be had with ragda pattice ( a famous Mumbai street food) or with chole tikki ( potato patty topped with chick peas) I pan fry the patty.
However, today I felt like having some deep fried stuff...and I decided a little indulgence would not hurt. I also reminded myself that everything in moderation is just fine ( I do believe in that theory) and I made these aloo tikkis. Now these tikkis are not exactly healthy but they are delicious so whenever you are in a mood to indulge try them out. Here is the recipe for these deep fried golden beauties.

Ingredients
  • 7 medium sized potatoes
  • 4 bread slices ( I used whole wheat bread slices)
  • 4 tbsp corn starch
  • 6-7 green chillies minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying
Method
  1. Pressure cook the potatoes.
  2. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher while still warm.
  3. Wet the bread slices with a little water. Squeeze the slices between your palms to drain off the water.
  4. Add the drained bread slices to the potato mixture.
  5. Add green chillis, corn starch and salt.
  6. Grease your palms with a little oil. This ensures that the potato mixture does not stick to your palms.
  7. Take a little potato mixture and make a small round ball and then flaten it pressing it between your palms.
  8. Shape all the tikkis this way.
  9. Heat oil in a wok. After it heats up, deep fry the tikkis till golden brown.
  10. Serve hot with green chutney or ketchup.
